Course Title: 101 Textures With Acrylics

You will discover and play with lots of techniques to create textures with acrylic artwork. No experience necessary as you will not only learn a lot but also have fun while exploring. Play with pastes, papers, natural materials – you can bring lots of ‘stuff’ from home i.e. tinfoil, tissue paper, stencils.

 


Course Title: Kumihimo Bracelet With Ribbons

Participants will be taught how to create a bracelet using Japanese Kumihimo braiding.


Course Title: Experiments With Watercolour And Ink

We will be trying a few techniques on paper using watercolour and wax resist, ink and string, brush and ink mark making and printmaking using tetra-pak. Materials can be provided for $15 if participants do not have their own supplies. Supply list will be provided to participants.

Course Title: Exploring Collage

This workshop offers you a chance to try new things and have fun. No experience necessary. You will create a 5 x 7” collage that celebrates a person that inspires you. Bring an image (passport size) of that person to incorporate into your work. Resources will be available to resize the image if required. You can use any number of mediums (e.g. bring along watercolours, pencils, pastels, fabric and thread), along with bits and pieces of collage stuff from home… lace, paper, stamps, maps, magazines, feathers, stencils, fabric, poems, photos, what ever manner of flattish objects strike your fancy.

Course Title: Book Variations

Learn how to fold the perfect accordion book and make a large accordion book with covers, a “Crown Book” which is a great structure into which one may incorporate artwork. We will make two or three folded book variations and create a simple cover for one of the books.

 


Course Title: Free And Easy Watercolours (done quickly with little over painting)

Watercolours, good watercolour paper Arches –Winsor Newton, a varied size of brushes, water jars etc. Bring photos and sketches so as to work on material you wish to turn into paintings. I will demonstrate two pieces, one in the morning session and one after lunch. (Hours:10am to 12pm. LUNCH.1pm to 3pm.)


Course Title: Make Your Mark With Acrylics

We will have a fun and messy time exploring fluid acrylics and pouring medium, creating flowing abstract works’ of art. I will demonstrate several different techniques for you to experiment with. Warning: this is addictive!!

 


Course Title: Marble Paper The Easy Way

This is a fun, very easy way to make marbled paper. We will use shaving foam and food colouring. Once you have done it, you can do it with all the kids in your life. Materials will not be supplied but are easily available and inexpensive. We will be using regular computer paper.

Taking a good photograph of your artwork is a crucial step in the process of displaying and promoting your art whether for print or email, web site or blog. Online viewers will only be able to judge you as an artist by the digital images they see—so you will always need high-quality photos of your art in order to sell your work online or submit to a gallery or jurors — and be taken seriously. Some basic steps will be learned in order to elevate your finished image.

Give your painting a new and different life! Paintings that go beyond the “so what” factor get noticed and are viewed as being interesting and creative. Whether you paint in a realistic semi-abstract or abstract style, you will learn to look at shapes, colour, and composition rather than objects. To produce a successful painting, one must know the limitations of reference photos. You will be introduced to different methods that artists use to transform their photos into dynamic new images.

We will be making paintbrushes from an assortment of material, including feathers and hair. This class was inspired by a trip to Morocco where every pottery painter made their own brush.  It was an art passed down through generations.

Course Title: Practical Negativity

A basic approach to the negative painting technique used in watercolour. I will cover choosing an appropriate beginners subject, drawing out a sketch, demonstrating the technique, then supporting the students as they try it out. I will also cover using the negative technique in all watercolour paintings as an on-going tool.

 


Course Title: Oriental Watercolour Flowers and Birds

Rice paper is very water absorbent, you need to be quick. How can you paint quickly? Work on your technique. Your brush dances. Within minutes you get a picture of flowers and birds so lively you will sing.


Course Title: Kumihimo Bracelet With Magatamas (Beads)

Course Title: Colour Explorations

Colour is one of the primary components of our art; in this workshop we will explore colour, its harmonies and contrasts. We will mix colours and identify colour values for expressing form. Finally we will use the knowledge gained to produce one quick study.  While primarily for painters, fibre artists will also enjoy it.  Participants are asked to bring at least 7 paints in their media of choice – white, a cool red, blue and yellow and a warm red, blue and yellow; your brushes, water container, palette and apron or paint shirt.  Paper to work on will be provided.


Course Title: Creative Doodling

Make intricate designs with a pen and nice paper. This is also known as Zendoodles. This is fun, relaxing and beautiful. It is most often done in black and white, but can also be done with coloured pens. You will have a book of designs to work with, and then you will develop your own designs.


Course Title: Fun With Fabric

Fabric collage a whimsical critter using fabric scraps, fiber scraps, and found objects. You will learn to make freezer paper pattern, choose fabric options for colour and texture, and embellish the critter with fussy cutting and found objects. Draw your own basic critter, or use design provided. Fabric scraps will be provided, but it’s a great chance to clear out your house! Any fabric is OK but slippery stuff not recommended. Other necessities will be supplied. Just a fun afternoon!


Course Title: Faux What? Dali-style 3D sculpture

Walk through a 3-step process Dali would have used: start with a wood panel board, design a textured surface; add your modernist wire sculpture – listen to the applause! Bonus: take the test to see what type of “creative” you are AND learn some ways to deal with those times you simply have no ideas (“blank slate syndrome”).
