Colour, Contrast and Cacophony!

Kerry Seifried & Kathryn Compton

November 14 & 15, 2020 (2-day workshop)
9:30am – 3:30pm

McTavish Academy of Art – 1720 McTavish Rd, North Saanich

Come join us as we learn on the first day how to mix the colours we want, as well as use colour to move the viewer’s eye around a painting.  Under the skilled tutelage of Kerry Seifried, we’ll learn to recognize colour values and use them to make our paintings appear three dimensional by creating the illusion of depth and distance.  Be prepared to stretch your colour knowledge!

Then on the 2nd day, Kathryn Compton will guide us through applying that knowledge, painting large, colourful, loose florals, landscapes with light and impact, and abstracts that apply powerful colour combinations, all using a negative painting technique for the acrylic medium. Be prepared to stretch your canvas size – that’s right, we will be painting BIG!

This workshop has wide applicability to inexperienced and experienced acrylic painters. Oil painters and even watercolourists who would like to explore the acrylic medium will gain a lot from this workshop.

Kerry Seifried has studied colour and values, and her on-line courses are currently in development.

Here’s what her students have to say:

“This class was extremely interesting and helpful!  I thought I knew a lot about colour, but I learned more from Kerry in this class than I’ve ever learned anywhere else, and everyone around me felt the same.  Kerry was super organized, with beautiful handouts and great explanations.”

“Kerry is an experienced and excellent instructor.  I love how we could use our cool and warm colours to create a colour wheel. Her handouts were very helpful. Thank you Kerry for a great class.”

Kathryn Compton has taught negative painting techniques for several years after studying and applying the technique in her own watercolour and acrylic paintings.

Here’s what her students have to say:

“This class was excellent.  The instructor had lots of experience using this technique as well as teaching.  She was positive, supportive, funny and the class was well-planned.  I got far more out of it than I had expected. Wonderful!”

“Kathryn Compton is a delightful instructor. She was knowledgeable, well prepared, and encouraging – all attributes that helped to make a workshop enjoyable, especially when you are not confident in a new technique being studied.”
