Linda Anne Baker's work is inspired by the extraordinary beauty seen in the world around us. Loss, the passage of time, transformation and the ephemeral nature of life are themes she finds deeply moving. These subjects naturally lend themselves to treatments involving ambiguity, suggestion and symbolism. Evocative images connect people with nature in a way that she hopes highlights the need for preserving the natural world and its creatures. Winner of multiple awards in many national and international competitions, Linda's images have been published in numerous magazines and in three books. Her curiosity and drive to create have led her down many artistic paths including Chinese brush painting, printmaking, collage, fibre art, photography and watercolour. Her work is available in the form of cards, card packs, art journals, matted prints, framed prints and monotypes on cradle board. She also makes tiny haiku book necklaces, with one haiku by a traditional Japanese haiku poet in each one. Since moving to Victoria in 2005, Linda has participated in the Sooke Fine Arts Show; Moss Street Paint-In; West Shore, West Saanich and Scattered Artists Studio Tours; and shows in the Massey Gallery of the Art Gallery of Greater Victoria as well as in numerous other locations in the Victoria area. She has also been in three shows at the ArtSea Gallery in Sidney and her work was on display at the Coast Collective from 2009-16. Currently, she is a member of the Arts and Culture Colwood Society and the Scattered Artists group; her work is available at the Goldfinch Arts Centre gift shop and is also shown at the Juan de Fuca Recreation Centre Art Space. - Kathy Baker

My work is a reflection of my idiosyncratic beliefs about memory, and how I view the world. Memory, for me, is like a series of snapshots, captured at inauspicious moments. Those moments are ephemeral, and often layered together and indistinct. As I have gotten older, I realize that what I choose to capture are things on the periphery as I go about living my life. I find that my memories, and perceptions about them are connected to moments that most people ignore. I find beauty in the moments while I am waiting to get on a water taxi, or sitting inside a fogged-up boat. I love capturing the things I see from the back seat of the truck, on a road trip; I paint and draw people buying vegetables at a market, or the reflections on windows as I stroll through a town. I see the light and shapes of the scene. I want to hold onto the moments that are about the beauty of the ordinary. I am also a lifelong “people watcher”. I find beauty in faces that have character, and a story to tell. Sometimes, the story is communicated to me through direct eye contact. Sometimes, it’s personal, and I am capturing a moment that no one is intended to really see. I paint the momentary expressions that are ignored, or missed. They tell a different, more personal story. I am a watercolourist, because I love the translucency, and richness of colour, texture and values that the medium can create. I am a retired art teacher . My work can be found at South Shore Gallery in my home town of Sooke, BC. My painting, “ Memories of Relics and Summer” was in Splash 25, in July of 2024. I have been a member of the Federation of Canadian Artists, and shown in numerous juried exhibits both through the Federation, and with the International Watercolor Society. I was selected to show in the IWS First Canadian Biennale, and the Canada 150 Exhibit. I have also had two group shows and a solo exhibit and have shown twice at the Sooke Fine Arts Show. I also teach workshops. - Susan Ball

Originally from Montreal, the Laurentian mountains ignited my passion for nature, seascapes and landscapes. My studies and career in forestry and science, both in Canada and abroad, have enabled me to blend my love of forests, plants, wildlife and the outdoors with my enthusiasm for art. Victoria has been my home for over 30 years, and its lush landscapes and seascapes have inspired my paintings, and my passion for hiking, biking, kayaking and travel are also reflected in my art. Drawing and painting carry me away to a quiet world of solitude and joy. My current art is focused on watercolour and life drawing, but I have worked in pen and ink as well as acrylics. I have fun with artists from the Metchosin ArtPod, Studio 30, the Cordova Bay Art Group, Victoria Alfrescoes, and Westshore Artists and SPAC. I have been adjudicated into FCA (Federation of Canadian Artists) Exhibitions in Vancouver and Victoria, and my work has been shown at the ArtSea Gallery, Gage Gallery, Metchosin ArtPod, Sidney ArtWalk, as well as at Studio 30, Bevan Bistro, and SPAC Exhibitions. “It is the expressive journey that I enjoy, bettered by those along the ride.” - Carol Bednarski

I am a self taught artist and would classify my style as abstract/impressionism. My work is characterized by bold brush and palette knife work, dynamic colour, and a loose, intuitive approach. My subjects are varied, but more often are depictions of nature; landscapes, florals and seascapes. Not seeking to perfectly render a scene or capture exact detail, but rather to capture the feeling and emotion. At the same time I’m chasing beauty. I like to start a painting with no intention or plan, laying down colours, shapes and lines, responding in the moment. I will add layers, scrapping into the paint, until I start to see something take shape. Often a landscape, sometimes a floral emerges. This is when I get excited and start to pull the image up from the canvas, still trying not to think too much and allow it to flow without force. Art and the journey of creating reflects the journey of life. For me it’s about trust. Learning to trust and accept what is and being fully in the moment, authentic and honest. It’s not even about the final result, (although it’s lovely when I create something I love), for me it’s really about the bravery it takes to face a blank canvas, overcome my fear, and just paint. - Jane Biggs

After a long and rewarding career in interior design, I turned my attention to painting. At first, I worked with water-based oils and acrylics but gradually began working with conventional oil paints. As a designer, I had spent my whole career drawing, drafting, and painting in watercolours but did not have experience with oil paint. I eventually started taking cast drawing classes with Victoria based teacher Noah Layne, where I learned many skills. Cast drawing led to still life painting, which I really enjoy. I love seeing the objects in my “set up” come to life under my brush. I also love to experiment with colour texture in abstract painting. All of my learning and experimenting contributes to the great variety in my styles of art. I also bring inspiration from my travels to be studio. Recently, I was able to spend a week in Porte-du-Quercy, France with noted still life painter Stefaan Eykmans. Currently, I am working on a series of paintings based on the beauty found in the South of France. This is a fresh new direction for me to explore and one that I hope will lead me back to the French countryside. - Sam L. Boehner

Sam L Boehner, BSc, CSPWC, AFCA, Past President CSPWC Sam began painting in watercolour in 2007 as a way to cope with depression and anxiety. Since then, her career with watercolour has taken her work worldwide including many exhibitions in Canada, and others in the US, Mexico, France, and Italy. Sam has been passionate about watercolour since the moment she picked up a brush. Her career also included many years of teaching the medium to hundreds of students. Upon reflection, after her tenure in 2023, as President with CSPWC; the oldest watercolour society in Canada with its roots in the 'Group of Seven', and celebrating its 100th year in 2025; Sam has pivoted from painting for Galleries and Exhibitions to answer a call to give back. Backstory: Sam's start in watercolour came as a result of childhood trauma. In 2007, after a bout of longing, and searching for answers due to a break of her mental wellness, she warmly describes the encounter as 'watercolour found me'. Sam's recovery included the medium of watercolour that soon became a refuge. Present: Sam recently launched her beta program with great success. She is pivoting her art career to give back to the community and inspire others to find healing and their creative voice. Sam is the creator and facilitator of Artful Healing online. A way for women to work through childhood trauma, using Art as therapy. She continues to paint for small exhibitions in her home studio space and mainly paints mediatively for somatic release and emotional regulation. Oil Paint Artist. I worked in watercolours for many years. I have painted and drawn since I was very young, but got serious in high school. I lived and worked in the north for for many years and focused mostly on abstracts. Since returning to Victoria I continued in watercolour, but found I was not happy with it, so switched to oils a few years ago. I am still learning the process and am enjoying the medium. Despite being an avid creator her entire life, Caroline came to art as a formal study relatively late. Her voracious appetite for knowledge has pushed her to study such diverse subjects as anthropology, chemistry, fibre arts, dance, and wellness. She's lived or worked in eight provinces and two territories and has explored mediums ranging from pastels and charcoal to watercolour and oil, and even explored block printing and sculpture. In art, Caroline aims to portray the essence of a subject in the medium best suited to represent it. Currently, Caroline works mostly in oils to capture still-life subjects in a loose, representational approach. Caroline has shown and won awards in several group and solo shows in B.C. and Alberta, and has pieces in collections in Canada, the U.S. and the U.K. - Geri Byrne

Art For Your Heart gerihbyrne@gmail.com “I do not follow a path. Just my heart” Geri Byrne is a Victoria based artist whose work is inspired by nature’s dramatic and colourful moments. A simple slice of everyday! Geri’s paintings are admired and easily recognized by her use of light, vibrant colour and contrast. Because colour and light have such a powerful impact on the body, soul, and mind, we are naturally drawn to colour often triggering an emotional state that is stimulating and energizing. As a former proprietor of a gallery in the foothills of Alberta, Geri came to recognize that those whose artwork found lovely homes to reside in was often because the art piece had connected emotionally to the buyer. “A work of art that did not begin in emotion is not art” Paul Cezanne - Roberta Calder

After a lengthy “pre-art” career that saw me working all over Canada and USA, I moved to beautiful Salt Spring Island on the west coast of Canada in 2015 to begin my second life as an artist, woodworker and person of leisure. The Salt Spring Island era came to an end in the spring of 2023, when my wife Christine and I, our dog Bailey and our cat Bella, moved to beautiful Sidney by the Sea. I have now run out of excuses why I cannot focus on my art without interruption. I have no formal art training but have subjected myself to a number of workshops and classes over the last five years from many talented artists in many beautiful places. I work in oils and focus primarily on portraiture, figurative work and still life but from time to time I throw in a few other things that strike my imagination. My art business has been designated as a “Trusted Art Seller” with The Art Storefronts Organization, which means you can shop with confidence, and know that I stand behind the quality and value of my products. - Claire Christinel

Kathryn Compton is an award-winning Canadian artist who works in both oils and watercolour. Originally devoted to watercolour, she became captivated by the depth and flexibility of oil painting a few years ago and has been joyfully immersed in the medium ever since. She is especially fascinated by the way light and dark can be manipulated with oils, and she considers each new work an opportunity to push her skills further. While Kathryn chooses her subjects intuitively, she is often drawn to those that present a challenge. Portraiture has become a particular passion, and in recent years she has completed a growing number of commissioned works. Kathryn is member of the Federation of Canadian Artists, regularly exhibiting with both the Victoria Chapter and the Vancouver Gallery. She is also an active member of the Arts & Culture Colwood Society, Studio 30 Painters, and the Saanich Peninsula Arts & Crafts Society. I was born in 1959, and spent my first few years in the prairie lands of western Canada. Whether through music, painting, photography or cartooning, I’ve expressed my imagination with enthusiasm and, most importantly, humour. I’ve studied both fine art and commercial art in Ottawa. After graduation, I joined the fast-paced world of advertising as a Graphic Designer and then Art Director, in Ottawa. Very soon, finding myself drawn back toward the west. Packing up my guitar, paints, brushes and drawing board, I headed headed west to Vancouver. Now peacefully settled in beautiful Victoria with my wife Joanne and our pups, I’ve made my living as a Graphic Designer, while continuing to fulfill my creative soul through my personal water colour art. The wild, rocky west coast of Canada inspires me. The sheltered islets and bays of the Gulf Islands – to the misty, storm-tossed sands of Long Beach on the west side of Vancouver Island. Oh, it’s just Canada, my big backyard and yes I do have an indoor studio and gallery, for those wild weather days. Why paint from a photograph when I can breathe in the fresh air, feel the sun on my face, and maybe even dodge a few mosquitoes while passionately painting the landscape on location? I am living life on the edge…of my canvas. - Rita Daly

ARTIST STATEMENT – JOY DAVIS As I’ve always called BC’s coastal islands home I have deep affection for the landscapes of the Pacific Northwest with their endlessly varied combinations of mountains, ocean, islands and trees. Painting, in both oils and acrylics, helps me see this distinctive world a bit differently. Constantly changing light and colour shapes -- and reshapes – familiar vistas. And the delicate lacework of sandstone, the contorted trunks of Arbutus, the infinite rhythms of tide and current, the strength of mountains beg to be captured on canvas. I work in both oils and acrylics and enjoy their differences. Oils demand care -- and reward me with soft edges, muted colours, rich tones. Acrylics permit a degree of spontaneity that adds fun to the process and allows for constant adjustment until composition and colour are somehow right. For the most part I work in the studio, often using photographs that I’ve taken as a starting point. And I enjoy participating in workshops and meeting artists as they always introduce new ways of capturing moments in time. Lately I’ve been playing with palette knives as a means of being more impulsive in capturing nuances of shape, colour and light. Among the recurrent themes in my paintings are Arbutus trees with their improbable structures, colours, and ways they frame the landscape. It is challenging to use paint to capture their distinctive dimensionality and the textures and contrasts of their bark. Another theme is Mt Baker, which has been on the horizon of almost all my homes in British Columbia. - Wendy de Graaff

I have been a ‘creative’ for about 40 years, from graduating art school, running a graphic design business, publishing some books, painting a variety of artwork (2D & 3D) and teaching mixed media workshops. My work is primarily acrylic mixed media and very textural. I produce large abstract pieces on canvas and transitioning to an abstract realistic style. I show these works in galleries and studio tours and private showings. I also produce smaller pieces on canvas or birch panels to sell at art fairs and markets. I was born and raised in Toronto but discovered beautiful British Columbia in my mid 20s. Sue Down (she/her) I began taking photos in the early 2000s to document my young son’s world. That very pleasant pursuit grew into something that felt more like a craving than a hobby. Sudden stops and U-turns became routine, with a glimpse of something insisting on being looked at more closely. Skewing scale by giving full-frame presence to something others might pass by unnoticed is one of my joys. Along with happening upon bits of nature co-existing in unexpected ways. And I will never get over the earth's unending textures and colours. I grew up in Prince George on the unceded traditional territory of the Lheidli T’enneh First Nation. And, since 1997, have been living on the unceded territory of the Lkwungen (Lekwungen) peoples, and the Songhees, Esquimalt, and W̱SÁNEĆ First Nations. - Dennis Drechsler

Before moving to North Saanich, I spent 25 years practicing law in Edmonton and was privileged to sit on the Boards of several large companies and to serve as Chair of the Board of Northern Alberta Institute of Technology (NAIT). In 2011 my husband, Timothy Christian, who is also a lawyer, (and now a writer: TimothyJChristian.com) and I were bicycling in France. While drinking a lovely bottle of local wine in the countryside, we decided to retire from law and to explore new directions in our lives. Having been a lover of art, and a collector, I took to painting with a passion – taking classes on line and attending classes at Vancouver Island School of Art, learning to express, on canvas, my love of colour and form. I have traveled extensively and what interests me most is the people – their culture, way of life, appearance and how they express themselves through their clothing, art and architecture. The same is true of the time I spent working with Indigenous people in northern Alberta and in the NWT. When I reflect and draw on these experiences to paint it's all about creating a feeling, one that reflects a particular people and how they live, or something beautiful or powerful I’ve seen in nature, and that feeling comes from the combination and flow of colour and texture on the canvas. I use acrylics, gels and sometimes a heavier textural element like plaster to create paintings with a complex layering of colours and texture, generally applied with a palette knife or silk screening tool to layer or subtract the paint from the canvas. - Joan Easton

I paint many different subjects from landscapes, seascapes, still life, animals and portraits. I aim for realistic representation. My medium is Water Soluble Oils. I've been painting for 38 years, starting with Watercolour long ago. I've taken innumerable workshops over the years with many notable artists both locally and from the States. I've been an Active Member of the Federation of Canadian Artists for 20 years. I've belonged to the Saanich Peninsula Arts & Crafts Society for a total of 10 years on and off. I've been in many juried and non-juried shows, winning a few ribbons along the way and making sales enough to keep me in supplies. I absolutely love to paint! There is nothing better than listening to lovely music and finding my way through the colours and shapes. I have taught watercolour in the past. Now I like to paint with fellow artists. I retired from St. Michaels University School in 2015 where I was Head of Visual Art. I taught there for 28 years, both in the Junior and Senior Schools, and among my teaching responsibilities were the delivery of AP Studio Art and AP Art History. The latter is a particular interest of mine, and I was involved in giving many workshops to teachers over the years. I worked with galleries such as the Seattle Art Museum, The Corcoran Gallery in Washington, DC and the Art Gallery Of Greater Victoria, sharing ideas as to how to incorporate artworks in the gallery into the curriculum in an engaging way. After retirement, I worked as a docent for the Art Gallery of Greater Victoria and also as a curriculum supervisor for emerging teachers at the University of Victoria. I have a degree in Fine Arts ( Scotland) and also a Bachelor of Education ( University of Victoria). Currently, I am committed to developing and expanding my own painting. I work in acrylics and oils, and have been exploring portraiture as well as still life and landscape, but I do find I am drawn most frequently to the figurative. I have taken several courses locally and am always inspired to learn more. "Paint the world the way you see it." I began painting in March 2020. I love nature and dog walking (as well as dogs, of course), and find myself drawn to painting the beauty of the island around me. I have a particular penchant for painting trees as I enjoy experimenting with colours and blends to see where the painting will take me. Trees, to me, are a source of great fascination and respect, as I am in awe of their size, strength, solidity, and resilience in the face of the elements. I find great mystery in forests and the amazing array of life that exists within them. The beach and coastline are a place of solace for me, where I can walk and think. I have challenged myself to paint parts of areas that I walk, and have surprised myself with some of the outcomes. Water, waves, rocks and clouds have all been a learning curve, though I find I am growing in confidence with each attempt. Julie Henderson Art I see the natural world as a mystical kaleidoscope of colour, movement and beauty. Art is a way to express how I feel about what I see. My recent paintings are created with acrylic medium on canvas and my style might be described as expressionist. The focus is often landscapes – mountains, oceans, lakes and meadows with a strong sense of the universal energy that moves through everything. Yoga philosophy is the lens through which I live and it usually finds a way past my mind and into my art. Decades ago, as a novice, I explored painting in watercolours and life drawing, taking lots of interesting courses from talented artists. Emily Carr was my muse …… sitting on my shoulder like a parrot, encouraging me to brave the unknown. This is my foundation and I have endless gratitude to all those who guided me through the chasm of confidence stage because art has become my solace, best friend and enduring joy. - Kay Henry

All of my life I’ve derived great pleasure from creative expression, exploring a variety of mediums and working with various materials. Over the last number of years my desire has turned to a focus on painting with acrylics, and some of the workshops offered by SPAC provided a wonderful springboard. In one such workshop, the words of professional painter Gaye Adams struck me and continue to motivate me and ring in my head: “Paint 100 paintings and you will become a different painter”. I’m enjoying the process while continuing to progress toward realizing that goal. - Megan Hill

Living in Victoria, BC, I have been learning the joys (and sometimes frustration) over the last 10 years of experimenting with the interaction of colours and shapes and allowing those elements to evolve into paintings that speak to me in a happy way. Primarily using acrylics (with some collage and printing), my paintings almost always start in the abstract and the journey begins there. I have also started exploring the use of oil and cold wax. - Tricia Hodgins

A life-long art learner, Shelley has completed courses in photography, sculpture, life drawing and painting. She is a former music teacher and sings in a classical choir in Victoria, BC. She has been painting since 2018, and while the subject matter changes, her free flowing, intuitive, colourful style has remained a constant. Shelley paints mostly in acrylic, but adds collage, pastel, and oil stick. She paints in the silence of her home studio with some of Victoria’s best coffee at hand. She is inspired by street art, nature, and simply beautiful things like the colour of a stormy sky or the droop of a tulip. She has painted fantastical creatures, melting polar mountains, and flowers just a bit beyond their prime. Lately she has been fascinated, and ‘drawn to’ the abstracted shapes formed by trees while she is out hiking with her dog, or even just gardening in her yard. Since 2023, Shelley has been encouraged and delighted to be awarded three Juror’s Choice Awards for her landscape paintings at the SPAC Spring Shows. - Phillipa Hudson

I am a photographer, printmaker and mixed media artist. My creative exploration started with formal training in photography. I quickly needed to push the creative envelope and sought ways to combine photography with other mediums. That exploration led me to a passion for the wonderful versatility and unpredictability of encaustic painting (hot wax, damar resin and a blow torch) where I often combined photography or other collage elements, always working in layers. I continue to push my creative boundaries. My current work generally starts with water-based media and often incorporates collage elements, including photography, digital art and paper I have handprinted or painted. My process often cycles back to my love for wax, now cold wax and oil. Still working in layers, obscuring then revealing / waxing and waning, I continue to explore the interplay of light and colour. - Elaine Hughes

Adrienne's artistic journey traces back to her childhood, where her innate creativity found expression through various mediums. She draws her inspiration from growing up on the prairies, the scenic beauty of Vancouver Island (where she’s lived for the past 25 years), her travels and often her imagination. Whether going from a memory or looking at a photo, most of her creations start with a very quick line drawing. Usually, she’ll translate a small amount of that directly onto the canvas. Beyond that, there often isn’t a big plan. Following her intuition, the painting will take shape. - Donna Jean

I am a Canadian artist working with earth pigments and natural materials from my home studio on Vancouver Island. My multidisciplinary practice explores themes of place, time, transformation, and the environment. I am drawn to the raw textures of vast, weathered landscapes and to the processes of decay, erosion, and regrowth—both natural and cultural. My practice begins with a closeness to the land, where each material becomes part of an ongoing conversation. I often hand-extract pigments from foraged sources using traditional methods adapted to my work, embedding a deep connection to my surroundings in every piece I create. Through site-specific visits and contemplative observation, I gather impressions and data, captured in sketchbooks, photographs, and material collections. My research combines scientific, historical, and cultural elements, shaping artworks that evolve slowly through both analytical study and intuitive response. I create both two- and three-dimensional works, letting concept and context guide my choice of format and materials. I work predominantly with ethically sourced 100% linen cloth, hand-stitch, and hand-processed earth pigments to build layered surfaces that reflect narrative and place. My sculptural and woven pieces are constructed both on and off the loom, incorporating raw fibres, threads, twine, hand-forged metals, and formed clays. These materials flow fluidly throughout my practice, depending on the desired outcome of each piece—whether it hangs on a wall, hovers in space, or rests upon the floor. Ecological, geological, and industrial motifs predominantly inspire my work. Each piece becomes a tactile dialogue between research, observation, material, and memory, rooted in a deep reverence for the land and the traces it leaves behind. - Judy Lightwater

I started painting in 2007 as a way to deal with stress. It soon became a way of life. I am a self-taught artist, However, my interest in painting has led me to take many different workshops and classes with local artists and institutions. Although I enjoy experimenting with different mediums and techniques, painting is my focus. I paint in acrylic, oil, or watercolor. I usually plan my compositions carefully while painting with oil or watercolor, mediums I use for landscapes or portraits. With acrylic, I am freer. The progressive application of paint and my state of mind are rather decisive factors in what the composition will look like. I let my imagination take over and the result is generally abstract. I am intuitive in my approach. I love exploring different mediums and ways of expressing my inner soul. - Tina Lloyd

I am a Canadian artist. I am a retired nurse, married with grandchildren. I have lived in BC since 1973. Such a beautiful place to live and explore. So many beautiful landscapes to paint! I am now a devoted full time artist. My works show elements of abstraction, an impressionistic style with a hint of realism. I work with oils, acrylics, watercolor and mixed media. I enjoy landscapes the most as well as still life. Creating art is exciting to me. In 2021 after getting my first easel I approached art with a passion and my soul was alive. Whether it’s on canvas, paper or wood panel, I feel art is a form of expression through one’s being. It evolves and shifts with what life brings each year, as I and those around me go through our life’s journeys. Art is a tool and fuel for the soul. Translating any moment in time with color, light and texture that can be shared with others is a joy. My goal is to let my paintings bring out what your journey is leading you to see and use it to inspire your being. Many of my paintings are also available as prints or on art cards that you can see on my web site. I am a member of the ACCS, SFAS, SPAC, AGGV, SACG, XChanges and MACC Galleries. Many of my paintings are painted plein air, outdoors on site. This is most enjoyable and I try to keep that up every week. Otherwise I am found in my studio creating new pieces of art. Originally from Montreal, I now live near the ocean in Victoria, BC. I am very much inspired by nature on my daily walks along the water and through the neighborhood and parks. My travels and living in Europe have provided rich artistic environments that have influenced my art over the years. My paintings range from semi-representational to abstract with a focus on acrylic abstract compositions. I have developed my skills and style of painting through participating in many classes and workshops. My artwork has been exhibited in shows in Vancouver, Victoria and area, and in online exhibitions. I have also enjoyed participating in community art walks and studio tours. I am an exhibiting member of the Federation of Canadian Artists (FCA), the FCA Victoria Chapter, and the Victoria Arts Council. My work expresses movement and an energy of joy, harmony, and enthusiasm. The emphasis is on exploration and discovery as I tune in, create a dialogue with the painting, and connect with what is unfolding. I often incorporate vibrant colors, bold brushwork and gestural marks in my work expressing a sense of freedom and spontaneity. As I work through the layers, I become more discerning as the painting comes together as a whole. With a background in science and psychology, I have always been drawn to the expressive and healing components of art and the creative process. I trained previously at the University of Calgary in Fine Arts and Art Eduction, but a career and family put my art practice on hold. My return to making art has been compelling and joyous, bringing me back to an earlier, less distracted self, and helping me to see a world that, despite its trauma, remains exquisitely beautiful. Painting is seeing, feeling, immersing, and being transported. I hope to share that feeling in my work. From the intimate magic of flowers to the monumental landscapes of mountains and sea, my paintings invite us to stop, to see, and to surrender to the spell nature weaves. Mostly, I paint the Canadian West, where natural beauty abounds. I’m captured by the clear, brilliant light of the Prairies, with its massive skies and otherworldly vistas, and enchanted by the West Coast, with its gentle interplay between sea, sand, forest, and calming, nurturing light. I paint these pictures in hopes of sharing the joy and solace that nature gives us. - Valerie Manton

Born and raised in Winnipeg, I moved to Vancouver in the mid 80’s, then to the Island 10 years later. Self-taught, I have always enjoyed creating all kinds of crafts and art, from a very young age. The last few years I’ve had a special interest in creating things from repurposed scrap wood and found items, such as grow charts and, during Covid, many fairy doors, thinking we all needed a wee bit of magic during such a difficult time. Currently my interest is in acrylic painting, and get great enjoyment especially out of painting animals, whether they be from the wild or pets. Commemorative pet portraits give me the greatest satisfaction, and I welcome commissions. - Helen Mason

Born in Penticton, BC, Sara grew up in Manitoba and currently resides in Saanichton on traditional W̱SÁNEĆ territory. Although she studied and worked as a digital illustrator, graphic designer, web/media developer, and photographer, she stepped away from her career ten years ago to focus on her mental health journey. Most of Sara’s work now is primarily art therapy in traditional mediums. She loves to learn and experiment with new techniques, mediums, and subject matter and is constantly evolving as an artist. “The learning part is just as fascinating to me and I love to incorporate my research and symbology into the art-making process.” Currently in her “nature era,” she is most inspired by the living things growing around her on Vancouver Island. All fine art prints are made with archival inks on Epson photographic paper rated to not yellow or fade for up to 80 years by Island Blue Print. Vancouver Island based visual ARTIST, Janet McDonald, works primarily in oils. She loves the opacity, buttery feel and blend-ability of oils for her favourite subjects: “wildlife and people”! “To capture a moment, I start by blocking in my subject and then laying down a thick paste medium around it. Using an artist’s comb, I work the “vibration” around the subject thus enhancing its presence in the composition and the concept of the painting.” Janet McDonald. Whatever the subject matter or medium, one finds strong texture, colour and light to be consistent components of this artist’s unique style. McDonald re-discovered her artistic talents in mid-life (now that’s a good crisis!). She is primarily self taught and has taken numerous workshops from locally renowned artists to build her foundational skills. She enjoys the challenge of continually broadening the boundaries of her work. McDonald’s works have been accepted and sold in juried shows including the Sooke Fine Art Show (2015, 2017, 2018 , 2020), Sidney Fine Art Show (2016, 2018) and the Ladysmith’s “Arts on the Avenue” (2015, 2017-2019). Other shows on Vancouver Island in which she regularly participates include the Ladysmith Arts on the Avenue, Nanoose Bay Art in the Garden, Comox Originals Only. Her original paintings have gone to homes across Canada, Europe and the US. AWARDS: Honourable Mention for oil painting entitled: “Descent” – 2017 Sooke Fine Art Show If you happen to be in Kihei, Maui you can find some of her Hawaiian Hula dance series at the Maui Fine Art Gallery, or if you are island hopping closer to home, a variety of her paintings currently hang at the Hartmann & Co. gallery in Nanaimo, BC. It was the technical challenge of making jewelry that appealed to Laurie along with the process of creating something beautiful from a flat piece of metal that felt both exciting and magical. In her workshop tools are always awaiting action: drawing, cutting, annealing, torch painting, sawing, filing, texturing, grinding, manipulating, polishing and more. Laurie's designs are influenced by nature, cultures and imagination and creates with sterling silver, copper and bronze. Laurie also posts regularly on Instagram @laurieamcdonald. I started oil painting when I was 13-years old, but unfortunately, life's economic burdens demanded I work more and paint less. Therefore, I took many breaks from painting and regret it terribly today. But, this has changed. The very misfortune that has haunted me for years, has recently created an opportunity for me to endure all burdens and live only to paint and enjoy that thing about pushing and pulling colour across a taut canvas, no matter the outcome. So here I go; the journey to my last day, leaving a trail of image and colour with no further regrets. - Paula McGahon

I was born in Manchester, England and emigrated to Alberta, Canada as a teenager. England showed me quaint villages and sleepy rivers, while Alberta exposed me to prairie, rolling hills, rapids, mountains, and glaciers. More recently, sailing offshore for several years taught me the ferociousness and indifference of the sea and weather. All have their beauty. I showed an interest in art early on and was influenced by my uncle, who was a gifted sign writer. Periodically I dabbled in oils, acrylics, and pencil sketching, but only after retirement from sailing did I pay serious attention to painting. Now on Vancouver Island, I am exposed daily to the sea, sky, and land which constantly challenge me with their ever-changing moods. Drawn by the emotion and brilliance of watercolours, and their intriguing flexibility to portray subtle and vivid colours, and to reflect dazzling light, I have focused mostly on this medium. In recent years adding oils, acrylics and pen and ink. My work is in private collections in Australia, Canada, England, Ireland and the USA. Commissions considered. - Kristin Monks

I am a visual artist residing in Victoria BC, and specializing in watercolour and oils. I'm best known for my painting, but I am also an animator and tattooist. Growing up on Northern Vancouver Island, I was provided with an endless supply of artistic inspiration in the natural world around me so my art often includes plants and animals of the West Coast. Painting portraits is also a specialty of mine, using watercolour, oil paint, or inlaying copper and shell into wood. My work tends to have a twist of surrealist whimsy, in an attempt to depict that which cannot be seen in our world with just our eyes. I believe in the value of creating beauty in this world, and I am deeply passionate about my work. - Jennifer Morin

I love to paint; the feel of paint on my brush; working with colour and texture. I love to create beauty. The west coast and the earth constantly draw me in, and I struggle to find ways to explore and interpret the essence of this experience. I am aiming for feeling rather than replication. At the same time, I am also interested in the interior journey. Some of my paintings explore this theme more directly. . I work in acrylic and mixed media, on paper, canvas or cradle board. While my works on canvas and cradle board can be hung as is, my works on paper are mounted professionally on acid free foam core, sprayed with Krylon to protect them, and framed. Art has been a passion for most of my life. I have always been fascinated by the effects of light on nature and how it affects the colours and mood of what it touches. As a teenager I spent hours sketching and playing with tonal values, and over 30 years ago was able to start painting seriously, taking classes and workshops with artists whose style and technique inspired me. Acrylics and Oils are my favourite mediums. Nature has always been my main source of inspiration, filtered through my feelings and life experiences. My academic training was in Communications, and that passion has continues to motivate me to express my love for nature, especially Canada’s rugged landscapes. My goal is to continue improving and evolving into a more introspective expression. There is nothing I love more than being in front of a canvas with rich colourful paints next to me and lots of ideas pouring into my brain. Through the years I have participated in many art exhibitions, including juried and solo shows in Ontario and in the past twelve years in Victoria, B.C. I am an active member of the Victoria Sketch Club, and the Community Arts Council of Greater Victoria (CACGV). I was born in Duncan and raised in a small town named Sooke, on Vancouver Island. Work opportunities brought me to the lower mainland and Vancouver area. It was there, I began to study First Nations cultures, Anthropology and Archeology, at Douglas College; however, after seeing the cave art from “The Cave of Lascaux, Magdalenian. France,” I switched my studies to Art, with a specialty in Pottery, at Kwantlen College. Since then, I have pursued my passion for pottery and art by taking numerous courses, participating in 4 different pottery guilds, and numerous sales and shows. After finishing a full time career in the customer service and the business world, I traveled before deciding to pursue my dedication to pottery. Currently, I have a small studio in Colwood on Vancouver Island. I maintain a functional line of table ware, and most recently, I am launching a line of culturally inspired Art, which I call ‘Wild Salmon Ocean’ highlighting the plight of our west coast wild salmon, as they fight to maintain their territory against invasive species, fish farms and disease. I also produce Coast Salish culturally inspired Art items, in clay. My wall hangings are expressions of “First Nation’s Coppers”; they represent an ancient tradition of holding and sharing power with others; my Salish Feast bowls celebrate the many ceremonies and feasts of the Salish Culture. I have been working on a mentorship with the late great Salish Artist: Charles Elliott. I am one of those souls who needs to create. When I'm not creating there's a nagging force in my body that doesn't stop until I address it. Several years ago I was diagnosed with MS. Eventually it took the fine motor skills in my right hand. But rather than give up or give in, I decided to start using my left hand. I've been painting for over 50 years, and have enjoyed innumerable art classed over the years, also branching into Stained Glass when I lived in Toronto and had suitable space for that medium. In Calgary, I took classes with Barbara Milne and David More, which helped me develop my technique. In the years I lived in Alberta, my work was carried (sequentially) in 3 different galleries and twice, one of my landscapes was featured in Calgary's Artwalk promotion. I have taught landscape painting and negative space watercolours in Cochrane, Alberta for a number of years and held a workshop on 'Painting the Landscape' at Royal Roads University the summer of 2011. In 2013, I facilitated a community 'paint-in' in Kispiox, organized by SWCC and with community volunteers, including Roy Henry Vickers, who was our guest speaker. It was held in support of the those First Nations and other groups who were trying to stop the mining of Mount Klappan, which would have polluted several salmon-bearing rivers. As a follow-up, with many supporters, I recruited artists for a month-long show at the community gallery in Whistler, for public education and sale in support of the Tahltan who were waging a fight to save the environment in a number of ways. I learned that organizing is not one of my skills! :-) That said, I do see a connection between art and raising awareness and have done an oil painting in support of Ukraine. Since moving to the Saanich Peninsula, and influenced by COVID and other events, I have not been as active in painting as I would like to be. Joining Studio 30 has been a big help— what a fine community of artists! — and I participated in the recent Studio 30 art show at ArtSea. For the last year, I've been painting the forest near Beaver Lake, which is within walking distance from my home. Recently, I've been experimenting with mixed media: watercolour and pastels - Lynn Pfeffer

Experience the captivating charm of lush West Coast woodlands and mesmerizing coastal scenes, expressed though natural wool landscapes. Julie Proulx is a West Coast artist and graduated from Emily Carr University of Art and Design. She is grateful to live on W̱SÁNEĆ territory in Brentwood Bay, BC, Canada. The beauty of nature through the seasons provides abundant inspiration for the West Coast landscapes. Drawing from light, colour and movement, Julie Proulx translates West Coast forest and coastline scenes into contemporary art works using multiple layers of thin wisps of dyed wool rovings and a single grooved needle. The fibre layers manipulate light and colour similar to an acrylic painting. The landscapes are very tactile, liken it to running a finger over the bark on a spruce tree or the lichen on a rock. - Lucille Proulx

I am an artist who is a photographer, painter and a potter. At the moment, I am making functional tableware using thrown and slab techniques. As a self taught ceramicist I have my own studio where I make my own glazes. The entire pottery making process from design to chemistry is remarkably engaging for me. My Chroma series of abstract landscape photography which look like paintings has enjoyed a two person exhibtion. I am planning to start on a large acrylic painting for my home. After taking the design and colour courses at VISA, I am confident in my use of colour and it has always been an important element in all of my art mediums. Since 2004, Linda Rajotte has been creating her west coast inspired wearable art. She weaves, textures and forms silver to make individual, unique pieces. The ocean and the symmetry of nature provide inspiration for her. Linda has used many other mediums in her life to express her artistic talents, however, exploring the unique properties of silver, copper and now gold dominates her life in art. Linda’s mathematical background has influenced her distinct designs. Logarithmic spirals found in nature such as ammonite fossils, shells, and sunflowers are a constant theme. All her pieces are made by hand so they carry within them the energy she uses to create Her jewellery has been described as being original, elegant and while it has a very personal feel – inasmuch as her jewellery is an extension of her as a person – it also conveys a strong sense of its eventual wearer. - Alexandra Reid

Alexandra (Lexi) Reid is a mixed-media artist based in Victoria, BC, whose work explores the intersection of creativity, mindfulness, and emotional restoration. Her abstract paintings are layered with rich textures, organic shapes, and intuitive marks. Each piece invites the viewer into a moment of stillness, reflection, or release. Using acrylic paint, collage, and gestural linework, Lexi builds compositions that feel both grounded and expansive. Her work is rooted in presence and offers space to pause and breathe. At the heart of her practice is the belief that creativity can be a form of self-rescue. Each painting begins with a sensory cue, such as a colour palette inspired by a coastal walk, the feel of gesso beneath a brush, or a phrase from her sketchbook. The process unfolds through quiet listening and playful experimentation. Her art is not about control. It is about connection, to yourself, to your body, and to what is asking to be seen. Lexi's collections often reflect emotional seasons. Some speak to grief and letting go, others to small joys or the tension between structure and freedom. Her studio is a space of calm inquiry, where materials become tools for healing and each canvas tells a story of process over perfection. She shares this approach to creative wellness through coaching, workshops, and online offerings, helping others reconnect with their own creative rhythms. Her artwork lives in private collections across North America. She continues to explore how small, consistent acts of making can lead to meaningful emotional shifts and a deeper sense of self. - Sandy Robbins-Wilson

Arden Rose, born to a couple with roots from France and Finland, was raised in a nurturing and creative environment that instilled a deep appreciation for the natural world. Nature became an integral part of her upbringing, as she spent her childhood hiking, swimming, skating, and skiing, often left to essentially "run wild" outdoors. After completing her MBA and a successful career in the technology sector, Rose decided to follow her true passion and dedicated herself to her art practice. Today, she calls Victoria, BC her home, where she finds endless inspiration in the stunning natural landscapes that surround her. Arden Rose's current artistic focus is on exploring the profound connection between humanity and the environment, emphasizing the idea that we are never truly isolated from the natural world. She believes that we are, in essence, an intricate mirror of the natural world, constantly reflecting and refracting one another's essence. Through her art, she hopes to serve as a visual ode to the unquestionable truth that we are all undeniably connected. Rose currently shows her work at The Tofino Gallery of Contemporary Art, owns the Fairfield Art Studio, and has been Artist in Residence in numerous locations in Victoria and will be undertaking her third Artist Residency in France in May 2025. - Nancy Rotolo

Tim is from Victoria, BC. and is a member of the local “Island Woodturners Guild”. After retiring from a career in “oceanography”, he was able to spend many hours in his shop developing and exploring his passion for “Woodturning”. He draws his inspiration from coastal, marine, geometric and symmetrical patterns by simply walking a long a beach. Led by instinct he creates turnings that have wonderful shape, form, texture and patterns. He has created functional items such as bowls but he also has been inspired to create purely artistic and decorative pieces that have surface decoration, texturing and embellishments. All of Tim's turnings have a wonderful finish and feel in your hand. Tim, works mostly with local woods like Maple, Arbutus and fruit trees. He loves burls, and other woods with extravagant grain patterns. The use of green wood and allowing it to warp as it dries is often used in many of his turned pieces. The challenge of creating, the possibilities of shape and techniques, the meeting of other artists and meeting new people continue to fuel Tim's enthusiasm for the world of woodturning. - Jewel Spooner

I am a Signature Member (AFCA) of the Federation of Canadian Artists and serve on the Executive of the local FCA Chapter. Born and raised in Manitoba, I began my lifelong love of painting at an early age at the Art Gallery of Western Manitoba. I had encouragement from teachers throughout school, and graduated from Brandon University Faculty of Education with an emphasis on Art Education. I taught Art in small-town Manitoba, eventually discovering clay which became my singular focus for 30 years. In 1989 I moved to Chemainus on Vancouver Island where a group of 7 potters opened The Pottery Store, where I was managing partner. In 2007 I felt the strong pull of my MUSE and got back into painting. I paint mainly in acrylics, occasionally oil. My subject matter is varied…often rocks, seascapes, landscapes, sometimes still life, and occasionally figurative work. I have been living in Greater Victoria since 2011, close to my children and grandson, enjoying all that Vancouver Island has to offer…including winning tournaments of snooker and billiards. I have always enjoyed art and have tried my hand at a variety of crafts as well as painting in watercolour and acrylic. After retiring and moving to the Saanich Peninsula in 2017 I had the time to pursue my love of creating. During the Covid lockdown I took numerous online art courses and found that I love the abstract process. I’ve always enjoyed painting and trying all sorts of crafts but, being a working mum and then running my own little business, I didn’t really have much free time. In 2017, I officially retired and moved to Victoria, actually Central Saanich, on the Peninsula where there are lakes and beaches just minutes from me…I even got a little dog to enjoy the walks with. I’ve met so many nice people and have made some great new friends here with whom I can share my interest in the arts. I continue to practice working in acrylic, watercolour and mixed media on my own and from attending numerous workshops, courses and artist retreats. I’ve also had several show at our local community ArtSea Gallery and showed my work at the SPAC Spring art show at Mary Winspear. I am so fortunate to now have the time to explore my own creativity and have found so much joy in it. I’ve sold several pieces of my work which has made me feel that I’m on the right track. - Greg Swainson

Tamar Swartz is a visual artist, currently working in acrylic paint and mixed media. She creates visual narratives that invite the viewer to step in and explore the boundaries of real and imaginary, finding the magic in the mundane. Her paintings are intended as a portal to a place where heart-centred connections can occur, and heroes journeys unfold. Tamar’s work is brought to life through her intuitive practice of finding "Creative Surrender" and allowing her work to unfold organically. She uses colour, spontaneous mark-making, forms and imagery to create emotional landscapes where stories are woven and meaning is in the metaphor. Each piece is a journey unto itself, which requires Tamar to keep the creative process fresh and ever-changing. Originally from Toronto, Ontario, Tamar currently lives in Victoria, BC, on the traditional and unceded territory of the Lekwungen Peoples, known today as the Esquimalt and Songhees Nations. Tamar's work is held in private collections around the world, including in Canada, United States, South Africa, Hungary and Australia. Once a member of North Shore Artists Guild, I found the value of painting with others in a shared community of learning and support. I am always willing to volunteer as I like to learn from others, and believe in the value of community development with the arts as a focus for bringing creative people together. otcorine1@gmail.com Odette’s art is an exploration of imagination, colour, and texture. She works across many mediums—acrylic, collage, gold leaf, encaustic, and more—layering them to create pieces that invite curiosity and discovery. Each work is shaped by her surroundings: the beauty of nature, flowers, the shifting light, and the expressions she sees in people. As an artist, what matters most to Odette, is not only what goes into a painting, but what others find in it. She wants viewers to pause, notice the details, and connect with the work in their own way—whether through a memory, a feeling, or simply the joy of colour and texture. Her paintings are meant to spark imagination and offer moments of reflection. She hopes her work brings joy and ignites curiosity in those who experience it. Originally from Quebec, Odette calls Victoria BC home, discovering endless inspiration in nature and culture all over Vancouver Island - Kenneth Upton

Creating has always been a part of Linda’s life. From a very early age she has built, stitched, painted and drawn! She is mainly self taught but has taken several courses over the years from a variety of artists, exploring a variety of mediums. Large acrylics have been her preference since moving to the coast sixteen years ago from an area close to the Rocky Mountains. To her, mountains, prairies and the sea all have their own unique beauty. She works mainly from photos using some of her own but is also drawn to other’s photos where a moment in time captures one’s imagination. Light and darkness draw her in and that is where the process of interpreting on canvas begins. In addition to displaying work at Arts and Culture Colwood gallery, JDF Artspace and a few community venues, she has a website and can be found on instagram and facebook. Inspired by her Canadian home, Jacqueline Vetsch's artwork is based on her recent move to Victoria B.C., roots in Alberta, and extensive travel. Jacqueline has had a long-term interest in "places and spaces", with employment as a Land Planner and Instructor in Environmental Science. She is a native Calgarian whose initial playground was the transition between prairie and mountains. One of her recent pieces, "Alberta Wild Rose" reflects her personality, a flower that is hardy, delicate and beautiful, informal compared to the manicured garden variety, with a few imperfect prickly parts! Jacqueline's painting experience goes back to childhood when she took art lessons in pastels and oils followed by courses in drawing and painting during university. She has continued painting through adulthood for leisure using watercolours and acrylic mediums. Her subject matter is varied including still life, flowers, mountain and coastal scenes and playful animals. - Pierrette Vezina

Artistic endeavors in the medium of wood For all of us, our home is our sanctuary, as such it should reflect our personal uniqueness. My belief is that these personal spaces should be occupied by only meaningful objects and art that will enhance the space, and thereby enrich the lives of the inhabitants. In today's world where choice eclipses – quality, good design and durability, I create fewer but more satisfying art & objets d’art for personal spaces. For forty plus years I have professionally specialized in artistic endeavours, rarely are two pieces of my work the same. In a modest, yet well appointed shop I work at perfecting my craft. My standards of work are simple: unique design with fine hand crafted execution, created and finished in an eco-friendly manner. The diversity of my work is broad, from designing & crafting artistic works such as sculptures, objets d'art to custom furnishings. I design and create artistic works that give my clients unexpected enjoyment – everyday. Commissioned works are thoughtfully considered. - Maureen Walker

I moved to Victoria from Ottawa in spring 2024. In 2021, I discovered all art mediums – acrylic, watercolour and oil pastels. I have taken many classes and workshops in the last three years and discovered a true passion for art. My favourite activity is creating one-of-a-kind greeting cards which are like mini-paintings. I made cards regularly for a local gift shop of a long-term care home in Ottawa as a way to fundraise for their foundation. I strive to become a better artist every day in my studio and look forward to exhibiting my art one day! - Nancy Walt

I have loved creating all of my life and have been inspired by the beauty of the natural world and by the wonder of relationships and the rich emotions that we all experience in life. As I keenly observe the intensity of beauty in creation and the passion and the fullness of life all around me, I endeavor to express these vivid images and emotive experiences in my acrylic and water color paintings and desire to entice the viewer into reflection on these evocative images that give a glimpse into the supernatural realm existing all around us. Visual images are powerful. My work is created to represent transcendent realties, to entice the viewer into deeper experiences impacting their spirit and emotions. - Harald Wetklo
