Artist Bio – Jan Dong
My work explores the expressive intersection of abstraction, colour, and calligraphy. Drawing inspiration from current events and personal experiences, I create vibrant, dynamic compositions guided by intuition, movement, and emotion. Each piece emerges through an instinctive process where gesture and mark-making form a visual language of energy and rhythm.
Spontaneity is central to my process. I work in layers, responding to each mark as it develops to create balance, tension, and flow. This approach allows unexpected forms and relationships to emerge, reflecting both control and chance within the composition.
Born in a Leap Year in Victoria, BC, I embrace the rarity of my birth year as a metaphor for creative renewal and unconventional rhythm — qualities that continue to shape both my art and my life. Guided by my mantra, “Live life to the fullest, no matter how small or big,” I approach my practice with curiosity, discipline, and a desire to create authentic connections.
